Family: Zygophyllaceae Scientific name: Tribulus cistoides Description: Plant Form Perennial low-growing herb. Size Forms mats up to 5 m across. Stem Spreading to form mats, covered in upright to flattened hairs. Leaves Opposite compounds of up to 9 pairs of oblong to oval-shaped leaflets, up to 10 cm long in total. Flowers Single bright-yellow with 5 petals in circular arrangement. Fruit and Seeds Woody, hairless burrs. Breaking into 4-5 wedge shaped spiny segments at maturity. Each segment contains 1-4 seeds. Habitat Beaches, sand dunes, rocky coastlines, agricultural land. Native to some parts of northern Australia but weedy elsewhere. Distinguishing Features Looks very similar to the non-native Caltrop (Tribulus terrestris) but differs in having hairless burrs and larger flowers.
