Family: Rosaceae Scientific name: Rubus rugosus Description: Plant Form: Scrambling shrub. Stem: Cane-like, densely covered in pale brown hairs and prickles 2-4 mm long. Forms dense thickets. Leaf stalks have divided outgrowths known as stipules. Leaves: Simple leaves with 5 or sometimes 7 rounded lobes. 8-16 cm long and about as wide. Upper surface dark green with few hairs, lower surface densely covered in yellowish-brown hairs. Flowers: White or pinkish with 5 petals. In branched cluster at the end of stems. Fruit and Seeds: Oval or oblong-shaped blackberry-like berry which ripens from green to black. Habitat: Grasslands, forests, coastal scrub, riparian areas. Distinguishing Features: Distinguished from other Brambles (Rubus species) by combination of simple leaves with rounded lobes, divided stipules, and scrambling habit.
