Family: Rosaceae Scientific name: Rubus niveus Description: Plant Form: Scrambling shrub. Size: Up to 2 m tall. Stem: Flexible, climbing or arching, cane-like and forming dense thickets. Covered in sharp prickles 3-7 mm long. Covered in whitish powdery coating and greyish hairs. Leaves: Consist of 5-9 (or sometimes 11) smaller leaflets in opposite pairs (with one larger one at the end) which are 2.5-8 cm long. Dark green on top, white and hairy underneath, and with prominent veins and serrated edges. Flowers: Red or bright pink, 1.2 cm wide, with 5 petals. In clusters at the end of stems. Fruit and Seeds: Berries 1-2 cm across, round or oblong, covered in short white hairs. Green ripening to purplish-black. Habitat: Urban bushland, grasslands, riparian areas, old gardens, roadsides, agricultural land. Distinguishing Features: Distinguished from other Brambles (Rubus species) in having many opposite-sided leaflets, and whitish hairs on stems and fruit.
