Family: Solanaceae Scientific name: Solanum prinophyllum Description: Plant Form: Annual or perennial herb. Size: Up to 50 cm tall. Stem: Prickly, sprawling. Leaves: Elliptic to oval shaped, 5-8 cm long, with deep triangular lobes. Covered with spines and thinly hairy on both sides. Deep green. Flowers: Light to dark purplish typical nightshade flowers with yellow cylindrical centre. Fruit and Seeds: Tomato-like berries up to 2 cm across, green or purple with pale mottled pattern. Clasped by very prickly bracts. Habitat: Forests, woodlands, parks, bushland fringes. Distinguishing Features: Leaves are often a darker shade of green and berries more mottled than non-native Nightshades. Habitat is generally natural forest as opposed to disturbed areas.
